What We Did

The project of sustainability and food security "Planting and Eating" is based on a comprehensive system of integrating traditional agriculture with modern and scientific agriculture. The fusion of these systems allows for different components and elements of the ecosystem to interact with each other. It also allows for the creation of humane and sustainable environments to restore and expand natural ecosystems that facilitate multi-use for plants and animals.

These systems are not only limited for agricultural purposes; these systems are used to learn and implement techniques in forestry, architecture, aquaculture, anthropology, economics and other disciplines of any biophysical, socio-economic, cultural and traditional context.

Beginning in October 2014, we implemented this permaculture system in the Educational Institution of Santa Clara where students, parents, families and community authorities were involved.

The project has three fundamental branches:

Reforestation

  • 5000 plants planted in an area of 80 000m² with 23 forest species, timber and non-timber, medicinal plants and fruit trees
  • A forest of fruit trees for permanent production for seeds

→ We reconstructed the biodiversity of all animal species that were present at some point due were eliminated due to the consequences of deforestation.

Food safety

  • A garden designed as an educational tool for the Santa Clara school and its students
  • A demonstration site of polycultures
  • A system of raising of smaller birds as revolving credit
  • A 'biochar' system, or ancient technology system of the indigenous people of Chachapoyas to improve and restore degraded soils
  • In the future, we are thinking about building a thick water system for the Amazonian fish breeding to create sustainability in the feeding of the children of the school.

Cultural revalorization

Within the framework of the cultural center, we work in Bilingual Intercultural Education promoting the fusion of traditional and scientific knowledge within the indigenous world view, as well as with myths, legends, dances, arts, customs, paintings and traditional medicine. Children from schools and organized youth participate in activities, in addition to elder peoples from the community.
